New Governor-General’s Arms LORD BLEDISLOE’S CREST
THE ARMS here shown are those of The .Baron Bledisloe, who is to succeed Sir Charles Fergusson as Governor-General of New Zealand. Their heraldic description is:— Arms: Sa. two bars erm., in chief three crosses patee or. Crest: A dexter arm in mail embowed, holding in the hand all ppr. a club with spikes or. Motto: Tien ta toy. Supporters: On either side a bull guardant gu., ringed, and a line therefrom reflexed over the back or. Lord Bledisloe, before his advancement to the peerage in 1918, was the Rt. Hon. Sir Charles Bathurst, and his branch of the family goes back to Benjamin Bathurst, a member of the House of Commons in 1713, who was the younger brother of the first Earl Bathurst. Their father was also a member of the House of Commons. Lord Bledisloe has been twice married. His first wife, who died in 1926, was the Hon. Bertha Susan Lopes, daughter of the first Lord Ludlow. The present Lady Bledisloe was the Hon. Mrs Alina Kate Elaine Cooper-Smith, second daughter of the late Lord Glantawa. By his first marriage, Lord Bledisloe has three children: his heir, the Hon. Benjamin Ludlow Bathurst, aged SO; the Hon. Henry Charles Hiley Bathurst, aged 25; and the Hon. Ursula Mary Bathurst, who will be 29 this month. The new Governor-General’s English seats are Sydney Park, and Teffont Magna. Wiltshire*.
