“BAD LITTLE THIEF”
ATTEMPT TO INTIMIDATE PRISONER’S WIFE GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE An attempt to intimidate the wife of a prisoner in Mount Eden Gaol resulted in the appearance of Thomas Angus at the Police Court this morning. Angus, a baker, aged 49, was charged with being idle and disorderly, having insufficient means of support. “Guilty,” he said, when asked to plead. “I came out of gaol only last week.” According to Chief-Detective Hammond, Angus had gone to the home of a man who was recently sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. He had tried to intimidate the wife, offering to convey money or letters to her husband. She had been so terrified that she informed the police. Accused had been arrested yesterday while carefully watching a motor-car in the city. “He is a bad little thief with a long list, and has just completed six months,” added the chief-detective. Angus explained that it was all right going into gaol, but the difficulty was coming out with no friends and no work to go to. “Perhaps Captain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, could say something for me,” he suggested. Captain Holmes said that he knew little of the man, but was prepared to send hint to the Salvation Army Industrial Home until he found work. Mr, E. C. Cutten, S.M.: Is there any chance of his getting work here? The Chief-Detective: I don’t know. It is doubtful whether there is anything he can do. Accused: Everything was running smoothly until this happened. “Well, we will give him a chance and another run,” commented Mr. Cutten, convicting Angus and ordering him to come up for sentence when called upon.
