BRITAIN’S RURAL BEAUTY
MINISTER WANTS COUNTRY UNSPOILED INSTRUCTION TO ENGINEERS British Official Wireless RUGBY, Sunday. Sympathy with the agitation for the preservation of Britain s rural beauty is reflected in a list of special instructions which the Minister of Transport, Hr. Herbert Morrison, has issued to the department's divisional road engineers. Mr. Morrison tells them to regard the schemes of road construction that are submitted by local authorities not solely in the light of engineering tasks, but also in relation to their effect upon the landscape and the countryside. The Minister says: —“The unspoilt roadside scenery of our country is of such inestimable value as a national asset that no degree of care can be deemed excessive in studying the details of projects affecting the highways." Particular reference is made to the preservation of ancient cottages and other pictruesque wayside buildings, “upon which,” says Mr. Morrison, “the beauty and interest of the countryside largely; depend.'* - —-- .
