REEF STRUCK IN HEAVY FOG
Wreck South of Dunedin PASSENGERS SAFELY LANDED Captain Reports “Total Loss” RUNNING on a reef last night on a rock-bound part of the coast south of Dunedin, the Union intercolonial steamer Manuka (Captain Ross Clark) has become a total wreck. No lives have been lost and the passengers have been landed. No attempt could be made to save the passengers’ luggage.
Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. rE Secretary-General of the Post Office has received the following message from the Chief Postmaster, Dunedin: “The Manuka struck the rocks off Long Point, near tlje Nuggets, about 11 o’clock last night. It is reported that numbers one and two holds are flooded, also the engineroom and the stokehold. The vessel has a heavy list to port sod is bumping heavily. DUNEDIN, Today. A telegram from the Manuka’s master, Captain Ross Clark, from Owaka, states that the passengers and crew have been landed at Long Point. The ship is a total loss and is practically submerged. Nothing has been saved. She went ashore in thick weather about 11 p.m. The Otago Harbour Board’s tug left Dunedin at 1.30 a.m. with Captain McLean and a crew of 10. All the Manuka’s mail was removed at Bluff. The passengers, numbering 218, included Fullers’ Comedy Company, due to open here on Boxing Night. All the company’s scenery and effects have been lost. The Union Company dispatched a special train to Balelutha at 11 a.m. to bring the passengers to town.
