FOUR STRINGS

CAMERON’S CUP HOPES MERRY MINT TO RUN W. H. Jones having been engaged for Merry Mint in the Auckland Cup, the gelded son of Catmint can now be accepted as one of the definite runners. His two outings at Wuodville last week, when he scored in the principal race on the first day and ran Blimp to a dead-heat at a disadvantage of 161 b on the second day, can be taken as fair evidence that Merry Mint is returning to his Australian form. Subsequent to two consecutive wins in Sydney Mery Mint was sponsored as a prospective winner of the A.J.C. Derby, but lie failed to gain a place, and in all his later races his form showed a marked deterioration. Merry Mint is a particularly wellbred gelding. his sire. Catmint, by Spearmint (son of Carbine and Grandson of Musket) from Red Lily, by Persimmon (son of St. Simon), while the five-year-old’s dam. Merry Roe, was a well-performed daughter of Soult (son of St. Simon and grandson of Galopin) from Erey Roe, by St. Hippo. There is a fund of staying blood in the above, and on this score alone Merry Mint should not be found lacking at the end of Ellerslie's two miles, although prior to last week even a mile and a-quarter seemed too far for him. Trainer J. Cameron has three others of his charges in the big Ellerslie two miles—Goshawk, The Hawk and the three-year-old Hunting Cry—but if the track is not to hard on Boxing Day Merry Mint will be the stable’s elect.
