MINERS’ WAGES
NO TROUBLE IN QUEENSLAND OWNER VISITS DOMINION Miners working in the Blair Atholl mine, Queensland, earn C2O a fortnight. This is the wealthiest mine in Australia and one of the wealthiest in the world. Mr. Moreton Hogan, proprietor of the Blair Athol mine, arrived in Auckland this morning by the Marama on a business trip. He stated that the present coal strike in Maitland did not. affect his mine. There was no trouble of any
kind at Blair Atholl. where the miners were quite contented and earned good money. The Maitland strike was a purely local affair. Mr. Hogan said that he had shipped large quantities of Blair Atholl coal to New Zealand. His mine contained one of the biggest seams of coal in the world. It was 93ft high without one band of foreign matter, and it was estimated that there were 400,000,000 tons of coal in the field. Mr. Hogan stated that his mine was worked under the Federal award. Nobody could tell what would happen over the Queensland strike, and he could not say what would happen at his mine if any change were made as a result of the trouble at Maitland. The mine-owner has come to N°w Zealand on business and will make a tour of the Dominion.
