MARTYRS BEATIFIED
BRILLIANT SPECTACLE AT ROME ENGLISH ROMAN CATHOLICS Reed 11 a.m. ROME, Sunday. The beatification of 126 English martyrs was celebrated in the Basilica of St. Peter’s. The martyrs consisted of Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, and 28 other laity, including three women, the remainder being priests, who were martyred between 1594 and 1679, in the reigns of Henry the Eighth, Elizabeth, James T„ Cromwell, and /Charles 11. The Basilica was magnificently decorated. Pictures of martyrs performing miracles had prominence, amid a blaze of candles. The immense congregation included English visitors. After reading the Papal Bull announcing the beatification, the relics were exposed and a “Te Deum” was sung. The bells of St. Peter’s tolled, being echoed by those of 400 churches in Rome. Investigation of claims for the beatification of 134 more English martyrs is proceeding.
