COSTLY AND LONG TRIAL
SOLICITORS WIN ACTION AGAINST CLIENT 1927 SENSATION RECALLED LONDON, Sunday. A trial that lasted 15 days is estimated to have cost £15,000, one of the most costly of recent times. llayley Morriss, a wealthy Sussex man, who was the centre of a sensational trial early in December, 1927, lost his case, in which he sued the firm of solicitors who formerly acted for him, for negligence and breach of duty in connection with certain divorce proceedings against his former wife. Mr. Justice Horridge, in summing up, said Morriss’s crimes were so appalling that the Lord Chief Justice, when Morriss appealed against his sentence in connection with girls, said it was the most appalling case of its kind within the recollection of the court. The jury was entitled to take this into account in this case. Applause greeted the verdict of the jury.
