APPRECIATION

Sir,—Many Catholics have been touched by the very tolerant and appreciative remarks of .the Rev. Dr. James Gibb on our late Bishop. One observation he made is frequently uttered: “We envy the grip the Catholic Church has on its people.” It is as if Dr. Gibb were to see shipwrecked persons clutching on to some pontoon, and were to exclaim: “What a splendid grip that pontoon has on these people. I wish I knew how it manages to do that.” As for the “grip” it has on us, the priest is not a constable .threatening us with the law and “gripping” us if we disobey. He is a traffic inspector pointing the way, and it’s our affair if we don’t take it. CONVERT.
