WEIR AND GILLESPIE STRIKE FORM AGAIN

EDEN V. UNITED SUBURBS With G. L. Weir giving of his best on a fairly fast wicket United Suburbs was very subdued in the early stages of its game with Eden on Saturday. Weir’s five wickets for 43 runs clearly indicate his return to real form, anti indeed the Suburbs batsmen found the ball, curling in slyly from the off, very difficult to cope with. Kerr and Wetherill were dismissed cheaply, though at first Wetherill tackled Weir’s howling confidently, only to be misled completely after turning a neat four and playing cleanly a couple of strong drives. Martin, Smith and Webster did not add materially to the score, but Bushill and McLaren steadied up and, in a cautious partnership, added a useful 69 to Suburbs’ credit. Butler and Mills, who relieved the bowlers, were played freely by Bushill and McLaren, but Mills eventually broke the partnership when McLaren was caught at cover-point off his bowling. Leikis, in company with Bushill, made a steady 27 with the edge taken off the bowling. Both succumbed. however. to bowling little short with the result

that judiciously arranged fieldsmen brought off easy catches. EDEN’S GOOD START Mills and Lawrie opened for Eden and they dealt confidently with Kerr’s fast but erratic delivery. Leikis as wicketkeeper allowed one or two fast balls to pass him for boundary byes at first, but he fully atoned for these slips by smartly catching Mills and Postles off hot deliveries from Kerr. Lawrie’s 26 and Mills’s 14 helped to swell Eden’s score, but Gillespie eclipsed all with a very creditable 52 not out. G. L. Weir, batting very cautiously t allowed Gillespie to hasten the scoring and when stumps were drawn his 5 not. out brought Eden’s score to 116 for four wickets.
