Bowlers Still On Top

FASTER WICKETS BAFFLE BATSMEN

Veterans’ Day in A.C.A. Cricket

SATURDAY’S A.C.A. cricket was chiefly notable for the way in which the veterans monopolised the batting and bowling honours. One or two prominent representative players, who have been under a cloud for some time past, also showed a return to their best form.

The difference in the pace of the wickets, as compared with previous weeks, evidently upset most of the batsmen. Despite the incentive of a faster turf, scoring generally was on the small side, and there were several fine bowling performances.

After the first day’s play, all four senior matches stand at an interesting stage. With the exception of two men. the leading team. Parneli, practically collapsed at North Shore, but a fine innings by Anthony, and some brilliant, bowling by McCoy, swung the pendulum in Parnell’s favour again. The biggest surprise of the day was CJ. L. Weir’s success with the ball

against United Suburbs. Originally picked for the Auckland team as a bowler, Weir developed his batting to «n extraordinary degree last season, while his bowling went back a lot. This season Weir has been a complete failure with the bat, but on Saturday he put up one of the best

bowling performances of his career. It was the veterans’ day out on Saturday. Anthony, Horspool, and Elliott, who have all been in great form this season, were outstanding. Gillespie. Garrard, and Saunders also showed a glimpse of their old form, and .Fletcher, the ex-suburban batsman, was again successful.
