CORNWALL CUP TRIALS

FIRST RACE TO TABUTEAU Five crews contested the flrst race on Saturday of a series of trials for the selection of Auckland’s crew to defend the Cornwell Cup. The event was held by the Takapuna Boating Club over the club’s course in Shoal Bay. Afetr a close race, Tio, sailed by Tabuteau, won with Oi (Carter) second and Delphine (Rogers) third. The other competing boats were Kitty (Field) and Mee Too (Johnson). On the run to the head of the bay Tabuteau held his position, being flrst with his spinnaker. Carter was also smart and held second place until just on the mark, where Rogers passed Him. Field followed close, with Johnson handy. On the beat to the Northcote mark all five skippers made a great race of it. Halfway across the bay Field passed Carter. Oif Sulphur Creek Tabuteau broke tacks, while Rogers followed close and held a better wind. Field stood close in shore and improved his position. Carter and Johnson folField. In the middle of the bay Tabuteau and Rogers broke tacks and did well, Tabuteau still being in the lead. Off Sulphur Beach Carter passed Field. Tabuteau rounded the Northcote mark 30 seconds ahead of Rogers and on the run to the finish the latter had trouble

with his spinnaker and Tabuteau improved his position. Carter was nowsailing very fast and passed Rogers. The finishing times were:-—Tio, oh 0i ’ 5h 34m 47s l Delphine, 5h 34m 40s. Summed up, Tabuteau sailed a well-judged race and deserved his Wln * .-.barter * s to be congratulated on sailing a dogged race on the wind Rogers was a little hasty and overanxious with his kites or he would have finished a lot closer. The other boys sailed improved races, and are to be reckoned with in later trials. Eight boats started in a handicap race for Z class. Kitty was first away and was closely followed by Delphine, Oi, Frolic, lolanthe, Trevic, MeeT 00 and Tio. Kitty was very smart with her spinnaker and rounded the mark at the head of the bay 15 seconds before Delphine. On the beat back Delphme passed Kitty. On the completion of the first round Delphine was leading Kitty by lmin 3sec. Tio was Jmin llsee further away and then came Trevic, Mee Too, Oi, lolanthe and Frolic at intervals. Trevic had an accident and retired. On the run from thCOte Kltty " sailing fast, beat Delphrne by 57sec for first place DelDhine was second and Tio third On corrected times Kitty was placed nrst, Delphine second and Tio third.
