HEATHCOTE WILLIAMS SHIELD GAME BEGINS GRAMMAR V. CHRISTCHURCH HIGH SCHOOL The first match for the Heathcote Williams Shield since 1926 commenced at Eden Park this morning, when the Christchurch Boys’ High School (challengers) met the Auckland Grammar School representatives (holders). The shield is the Aloaecar Cup of school cricket in the Dominion—the symbol of secondary school supremacy j at the summer game. j The Christchurch Boys’ High School team arrived at Auckland on Saturday evening. Play commenced at half-past ten this morning, and will be continued at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow'. Conditions were almost perfect for cricket when the game began, the hot, sultry weather conditions being mitigated to a certain extent by the fresh i northerly breeze which fanned the ground. Following are the teams: 1 hristehureh Boys’ High School.— I D. Dawson (captain), W. Brittenden, L. Fisher, H. K. Cook, I. K. Parsons. A. Cobden, F. R. Hounsell, M. Watson, V. C». Hill, D. Lee and A. Jamieson. Auckland Grammar School.—Renshaw (captain), Dixon, Robinson, Jessup, Atkinson, Howard, Burriclge, Harris, Hamilton, Munroe and Sawyer. Christchurch won the toss, and Brittenden and Fisher opened the visitors’ first innings to the bowling of Dixon and Munroe. The batsmen played themselves in cautiously, Dixon’s first two overs being maidens. The total had reached 29 without loss, after the game had been in progress for half an hour. The bowling was treated with respect by both batsmen, Brittenden scoring at a slightly faster rate than his partner. The Grammar fielding was keen. Brittenden brought 40 up after 45 minutes play with a boundary hit. His total was then 20, including three fours, and Fisher’s tally stood at 19 (including two fours). W ith the total at 44. and opening batsmen still unseparated, Jessup, a medium-fast left-hander, was brought on against the wind. He had Fisher, beaten all the way with his first two balls, but they were just off the wicket. Mirnrte came on at the other end. and succeeded in keeping Brittenden quiet with well-pitched balls. FINE PARTNERSHIP Brittenden then faced Jessup, who j made him decidedly uncomfortable | with swingers from the off. Jessup’s i first two overs were maidens, and after having two scored off his third he was replaced by Burridge. and Atkinson took over from Munroe. After an hour’s play the total was 4H for no wickets (Brittenden 26, Fisher 17, both not out). Runs began to flow more freely after the half-century was hoisted/ The total reached 80 at noon, seven bowlers having been tried without success, to separate the pair. \\ ith the total at 95, Brittenden’s contribution was 57, and Fisher’s 34. The first century was hoisted at 12.10. after exactly 100 minutes’ batting. The pair opened out with the luncheon interval looming nearer.
