97 YEARS OLD TOMORROW

DR. A. REED, OPOTIKI Special to THE SUN OPOTIKI, Today. His 97th birthday will b* celebrated by Dr. Alexander Reid, of f)tara, Opotiki, tomorrow. Dr. Held was born in 1832, and at the age of 27 he had a flourishing medical practice in Glasgow, but his health broke down and he came to New Zealand as a doctor on the immigrant ship Maori, arriving at Auckland in 1859. Before returning to England on the return trip he paid a visit to Whangarei. Subsequently he practised for many years in County Durham, North England. Then, his health failing again, he decided to settle in New Zealand, and came to Opotlki in 1877. For many years before his retirement Dr. Reid farmed in the Otara district, being assisted by his sons. He still takes great pride in his home surroundings. Dr. Reid’s hearing is failing, but he enioys excellent health.
