£5,000 BANK SWINDLE
DARING PIECE OF WORK AT SYDNEY TWO MEN WITH WARRANT United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY. Today A daring swindle was perpetrated by two men, at a cost of £5,000 to the Australian Bank of Commerce. This bank received a telephone message from the National Bank, asking for £5,000 in notes. Ten minutes later, two men arrived with a National Bank warrant authorising the payment of the £5,000 to them. The money was paid out, and the men left without hindrance. Hours later, the National Bank received a warrant in the usual exchanges. The signatures were forgeries, and they refused to *‘o.k.” the document. The swindle was then discovered. How the thieves secured the official stamp of the National Bank is a mystery.
