HAURAKI PLAINS NEWS

Following the fruitless efforts of the Hauraki Plains County Council to organise a queen carnival with the purpose of raising funds to assist the Thames Borough Council out of the hole in which it got itself when the Thames County ratepayers declined to contribute toward the £1,200 which was paid for a seaside park of 40 odd acres at Waiomio, the council, on Thursday, went into committee to consider the making of a contribution. The recommendation adopted was to cease making efforts to organise a queen carnival, and to take other steps to raise the money. The nature of the “other steps” was not disclosed. The District Highways Council’s scheme for the grouping of local bodies for the purpose of traffic control came before the Hauraki Plains County Council at its monthly meeting on Thursday, and though the opinion was expressed that the proposed grouping of Hauraki Plains with portions of Waikato, Raglan and Franklin Counties was not entirely satisfactory, it was decided to favour the idea, and to ask for further particulars concerning the allocation of costs. Councillors were of opinion that if these were based on valuation Hauraki Plains would pay more than its share in proportion to the service obtained, by those counties through which the Great South Road passed. Important questions in connection with the several bridges and ferries, in Hauraki Plains came before the County Council on Thursdai r . Advice was received that the Main Highways Board would not increase its subsidv beyond £2 for £1 for the first £IO,OOO and £3 for £1 thereafter, on the proposed bridge for Pipiroa. Concerning the bridges at Ngatea and near Paeroa on the Paeroa-Pokeno Highway the council decided to spread the liability for interest on the loans and the sinking funds over the whole county by paying the charges out of the County Fund account.
