WIVES DUCK HUSBANDS
JAPANESE WOMEN DIVERS Women who spend their lives diving for pearls in order to earn enough to keep their men-folk were described by Mrs. Romannee-James, when speaking on Japanese customs at a Sorotomist luncheon in London recently, says the “Daily Express.” “Japanese girls,” she said, “are wonderful divers. No man can compare with them. They go out day after day, leaving their husbands to look after the children and to cook the food. “If these girls return and find the dinner is not ready, their husbands hear about it. They are dragged down to the shore, ducked, and left crying and sobbing on the sands to get dry, when they swear they will not let it happen again. “These girls are not rich, but they make enough to keep their husbands, fathers and sons.”
