TE PUKE NEWS
Eight Maori couples are being married at the Waitangi pa, near Te Puke, on Christmas Pay, and preparations on a big scale are being made to accommodate the big crowd of natives expected from all parts of the province. Tljs whole of the area of the Kaituna flax plantation, comprising 1,350 acres, has now been planted, and the work of replanting the misses, which are few, is now being carried out. The oldest of the plantations, now three years old, are doing exceptionally well. On these first-planted areas another year’s growth should provide the first leaf to be cut for the mill, which is to be erected during the coming year. The milling operations will provide work for a considerable number of people, and be of considerable value to the district. A pleasant evening was spent In the parish hall, Te Puke, on Thursday evening, when Mr. Ron Powell, of the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company’s staff, who is to be married shortly, was entertained by a number of friends. Mr. F. H. Wilkie, on behalf of the donors, presented Mr! Powell with a handsome case of stainless cutlery, and in doing so referred in eulogistic terms to the recipient’s many good qualities. Mr. Powell suitably responded.
