AIRMEN’S FUNERALS

VICTIMS OF MILFORD CRASH MANY TRIBUTES PAID The funerals of the two victims of Thursday evening’s crash of the Dornier-Libelle flying-boat off Mil- . ford Beach took place this afternoon. pAPTAIN DONALD ERNEST HARKNESS, D.F.C., and Mr. Charles Field Goldsbro were both buried side by side at the Purewa Cemetery. Many tributes have reached Auckland from air organisations to the interest and the standing of Captain Harkness in aviation in New Zealand. Mr. Goldsbro was a valued member of the executive of the outboard division of the New Zealand Power Boat Association. Expressions of sympathy have been received from many sources by the relatives of the deceased. Mr. Goldshro’s funeral took place at an earlier time than that of Captain Harkness. A service was held in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, this afternoon, before the funeral of Captain Harkness. The Auckland Aero Club notifies that messages expressing sympathy at the loss of Captain Harkness have been received from Messrs. Leo. and Vivian Walsh, who pioneered flying in New Zealand, the air clubs of Taranaki, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Mid-Canterbury, and the Te Aroha Aviation Committee. At Captain Harkness’s funeral the pall-bearers were: Professors P. W. Burbidge, A. C. Paterson and S. E, Lamb, of the Auckland University College, Mr. R. O’Shea, Registrar of the college, Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie, vice-president of the College Council, and Mr. E. C. Schnackenburg, a college engineering student. Among the wealth of wreaths at this funeral were one from each of the following bodies; Auckland University College, Auckland Aero Club, Returned Soldiers’ Association, Aerial Services, Ltd., Nelson Boys’ College, staff of the Auckland University College School of Engineering, and from the College Engineering Society.
