PAPER’S STUPID STORY
SCHEME FOR ABOLITION OF BATTLESHIPS NAVAL PARLEY RUMOUR Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Not a single London newspaper has wasted space on the “Chicago Tribune’s” stupid story that the Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, would provide the initial sensation at the naval conference, by proposing the entire abolition of battleships. It is officially declared that there is not a semblance of truth in the suggestion. “The Times’' correspondent at Washington says London dispatches, reporting a possible British proposal for the abolition of battleships, have aroused discussion; blit though President Hoover’s views on this are not known, it can be said that the chief American naval officers will vigorously oppose it. They still regard battleships as the backbone of the fleet. Their view's are supported by Captain van Keuren, chief naval constructor, who will be among America’s professional advisers at the London naval conference. In the House of Commons, Mr. MacDonald, replying to a question said he could not give the House an opportunity to discuss the business of the Five Powers Naval Conference before its* assembly.
