MAORI GIRL SCHOLARS

PRIZES AT VICTORIA SCHOOL PRIMATE PRESENTS AWARDS Prizes won by pupils attending the Queen Victoria School for Maori girls were presented yesterday afternoon by Archbishop Averill. Mr. A. B. Roberton presided over a large attendance. The visitors were entertained by a short programme of native songs as a prelude to the ceremony. In making her annual report, the principal. Miss Breretdn, referred to the examination successes achieved by the scholars. The dux of the school was Rangi Tukume, and the winner of Lady Alice Fergusson's prize was Waina Rewharewha. The report concluded with, a tribute to the work of the staff. Archbishop Averill congratulated Miss Brereton and her pupils on the successes of the year. His Grace paid a tribute to the Victoria Ladies’ Association, whose efforts had made it possible for so many girls to attend the school. I-Ie referred to the loss suffered by the school of so good*a friend as the late Mrs. Hugh Campbell, who had taken a deep interest in its welfare. His Grace then spoke of the missionary centenary to take place at Waimate North in January in celebration of the opening of the first inland mission station in New Zealand. In a new country, remarked the archbishop, there was not a. great deal of history to stand behind it, but what there was should be made the most of.
