WOMEN’S PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE MEETING OF NORTHCOTE BRANCH A large attendance of friends and V. tors were welcomed by Mrs. McLaughlin at the final meeting for 1920 of the Northcote Women’s Progressive League, held in the Parish Hall, Nortlicote, on Thursday afternoon. Among the visitors were: Mrs. A. L>. Campbell, Mayoress; presidents and representatives of the National Council of Women, Civic League, W.C.T.U. for Birkdale, Albany, St. Heliers, and the Girl Guides commander for Birkenhead. A very enjoyable musical programme was given by Mesdames Bear, Davenport and Harrison, and the Misses George (2), Johnson and Peace. Congratulations were offered to Mrs. Minns upon her son gaining the Rhodes Scholarship, and a presentation was made to Miss Peace upon her approaching marriage. Mrs. Usher congratulated the Northcote Girl Guides on winning the shield. Afternoon tea brought a very pleasant meeting to a close.
GIRL GUIDE INTERESTS
DOMINION EXECUTIVE MEETS The Dominion executive of the Girl Guide Association held the monthly meeting at headquarters this week, when the chairwoman, Mrs. Tolhurst, presided. The chief commissioner, Mrs. W. R. Wilson, and Mesdames Leys, Keeble, Ely, Friedlander, Milsom, Miss Statham (members), and Mrs. Alison, Dominion executive secretary, were present. The provincial badges for all Guides and Guiders, it was stated, were now ready. Arrangements for the first Dominion camp, to be held on Trentham racecourse, were well in hand, and with a view to safeguarding the health of the campers the deputy chief commissioner, Miss Bell, and Miss Kebbell, head of camping, had asked the medical officer of health, with two other doctors, to inspect, report, and criticise the site and proposed arrangements. After the inspection they said that they considered the site and arrangements satisfactory and adequate. The first Dominion rally of the Girl Guido Association is to be held at Newtown Park, Wellington, on Janu--1 ary 11, when representatives -will be j present from all parts of the Dominion. | A vote of thanks was accorded the Cavell Guiders, who had sent money toward furnishings, and also to John Court, Ltd., for the gift of a carpetsweeper.

MISS GWEN COURT HAS HAPPY AND BUSY TIME CELEBRATING BIRTHDAY TENNIS AND DANCING Miss Gwen Court's birthday was celebrated yesterday with a jolly tennis afternoon at her home in Sarsfield Street, Herne Bay. fJPHE weather was ideal, and the guests spent a very happy time. Those present were Mrs. George Brown, Mrs. Wheeler, Miss Phyl Feet, Miss M. Peet, Miss Edna Walrond, Miss Kath Miller, Miss Noel Self and Miss T. Jones. In the evening Miss Court entertained several friends at another little tennis party. When it was too dark for tennis the remainder of a merry evening was passed in singing and dancing. The young hostess looked delight-
fully cool in her tennis frock of ivory crepe do chine. Her guests were Mr. and Mrs. V. Dibble, Miss Essie Gratton, Miss Edna Walrond, Miss Noel Self and Messrs. D. Wilson, V. Clark, R. Purdon and P. Whyman.

LADIES’ COLLEGE CELEBRATES PROGRESS DURING YEAR Large numbers of parents and friends gathered in St. Aiden’s Hall last evening when the Ladies" College, Remuera, celebrated “Speech Day.” The Rev. 11. A. Coleman presided and the principal, Miss Moore-Jones, received the guests. A programme of items was presented. The annual report stated that there was a total of 8G pupils and that much progress had been shown during the year which was satisfactory. The various classes under capable instructors had done well. At the conclusion of the programme Mr. Coleman presented the prizes. SUMMER FAIR
A very successful “Summer Fair” was conducted at the Mount Eden Congregational Hall on Wednesday. The ceremony commenced at 2.30 p.m., the Rev. R. C. Roberts presiding. Mrs. A. G. Lee, the president of the Women’s Club, in a brief address referred to the work of the club in connection with the life of the church.
A vocal solo by Miss Lilly Woods was highly appreciated.
The chairman introduced the Mayoress of Auckland, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, who, after some pleasing and instructive remarks, declared the fair open.
The many stalls, which ■were prettily decorated, were presided over by the women of the church. The church funds will benefit to the extent of £ 105.
SOCIAL EVENING
A very successful benefit social was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Waiuku, on Wednesday night, there being a good attendance of dancers and card players. The floor was in good order and excellent dance music was contributed by Mrs. James, Miss N. Miller and Mr. Watson, with Mr. C. H. Pearson assisting with drums, the duties of M.C. being carried out by Mr. P. Duff. A spot waltz was won by Miss M. Miller and Mr. D. Muir, and the Monte Carlo prizes were secured by Miss P. Elmsly and Mr. Gleeson. The 500 tournament was won by Mrs. Potier and Mr. C. R. Barriball.
A very dainy supper was provided by Mesdames Holmes, Huff, Pearson and the Misses Z. Robinson, M. and Maude Arkle, while the various prizes were donated by Mrs. Knight, Miss Arkle, J. Fraser and H. M. Barriball. In presenting- the prizes to the winners Mr. Barriball thanked all who had assisted to make the function such a success-
