SOLD CHAMPIONS
ROSTRUM AND FUJI SAN TAISHO AT 3,000 GUINEAS Victorian owner J. P- Arthur has already sold two champions before they developed their best form—Rostrum and Fuji San—and racegoers will watch with interest to see whether he has made the same error with Taisho, who was sold recently for 3,000 guineas. Taisho’s spring form gave great promise. Ho developed so rapidly that after racing in purse company in September, which is equivalent to Park Stakes or novice company in Sydney, he won at weight-for-age in October. His success was gained in the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield, and he won in such impressive, runaway fashion as to lead to strong Caulfield Cup support, and he actually started equal second favourite. Taisho ran a good race, but was badly ridden. Fighting for the lead with Prince Viol nearly half a mile from home, he eventually weakened, but was beaten only a head for third place. Taisho next ran third in the Derby, being only narrowly beaten by Carradale. Ran Great Race lie was among the leaders all the way in the Melbourne Cup and ran a splendid race for a mile and threequarters. and was in fact the last to tackle Phar Lap before the ultimate winner Nightmarch came on the scene. He was a tired horse when he contested the Williamstown Cup, but finished third. For a horse of little experience in racing, who in fact in all his career had had but five races prior to the spring carnival, Taisho showed exceptional promise. After failure in the Caulfield Cup his trainer planned to save him for the Williamstown Cup. and kept fresh for that ho might have won it, but other counsel prevailed. If he continues to develop as he did in the early spring, Taisho should prove a useful stake winner. He has been purchased by Air. "V iall, a AV esteem Australian owner, who won the High-weight at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day with Treat. Tie will be j trained by P. McGrath, -who scored with Treat and also with Parsec on the final day of the meeting, both at long odds. May Not Grieve Mr. Arthur received a good price for his horse, so that perhaps he will not grieve if Taisho turns out better than ho anticipated. The other champions he sold, Rostrum, whom he passed on to Eric Connolly, won the Newmarket and Epsom, while Fuji San, whom he sold to Joe Matthews for 1,500 guineas, proved a W.F.A. champion. He had won the Doncaster with Fuji San as a three-year-old, but the horse developed afterward Into not only a weight-for-age chain- j pion, but a wonderful weight-car- i rying sprinter, and won many big betting stakes for his bookmaker owner. Mr. Arthur owns Eastern Monarch, the imported sire of Taisho.
the pick of the rearguard. If Venarc is a starter lie will have solid support, with Mussolini, and if the former is absent Otaio Rose may appeal. IMPROVERS' HANDICAP
Peter Daunt . Lt Mace Memorial Handicap The principal event on the card has drawn a good field, and there is a wide margin in the allotments, the game and consistent Jean McEhvyn being on the back mark, and conceding 120 yards to the limit trio, of which Noearo looks best. Apex. Firpo, and Arikitoa are three useful ones 24 yards back, and if the latter has fully recovered from the trouble that caused his detection at the Otahuhu fixture last month, Edwards’s charge will be hard to dispose of. Sunny Bob and Avenger are a solid pair on the 60 mark, and the latter has recently shown an inclination to win a prize. Sunshower has soon worked her way to the rear of such a contest, but being bracketed with Jean McElwyn, will make a solid combination. Billy Sea always produces his best on this track, and he will probably find more friends than Linglield. Public opinion may favour Jean McElwyn bracket, Arikitoa (if started) and Neeoro. Among the “enders,” Petronious, on recent showing, will have a line chance of success, while Kate Logan’s consistency must gain her many friends. Further back Great Epsom will prove dangerous, and the promising Sir Guy will make his presence felt. Kantoma is decidedly use-
credentials, and will keep those in front of him busy. The final fancies may bo Baron Bingen and Mac Dillon. DASII HANDICAP Of £160; limit 2.19; 1 mile Baron Bingen Lt Wild Nita ... 32 Schoolmate . . Accumulation looks the most reliable of tlio limit trio, and Writer may be seen to advantage from his place two points back. Little Johnnie is generally a nuisance to the opposition, and Repute should soon have a turn at saluting the judge. If right. Quickfire will have a big say, and All Peters has recent form as a recommendation. Midland is a solid type of trotter and must be somewhere near his right form again. Nelson Boy is staying on better now. Etta Cole, if at her best, will claim attention. In an even lot most support may be for Midland and Writer. Proud Dillon and Avcnwood should go well off the front line, and just behind them is Pearl Logan and Omaha. The latter is pretty smart at the 10-furlong journey. Trimmer is well placed, and if he goes correctly will have to be reckoned with. Granite City cannot be left out of calculations, and Glenelf has retained his place in preference to Orphan. Concliffe and Dundas Boy are set solid tasks, but Billy Sea, if reserved, will be well fancied. Omaha and Glenelf may be the favourites. Cullensvili© has winning credentials in
saddle, while Alvira is a likely candidate to take honours. If back to his palmy days, Phil Smith would give the opposition a headache, and Horotane is useful. The distance looks short for Ricardo, but Auditress is one that will tind it suitable. Sylvia Logan should account for Lady Matchlight, while Firpo will keep all hands busy. When the machine is adjusted the selection may favour Sylvia Logan and Firpo, or (.if absent), Alvira. ELECTRIC HANDICAP Of £160; limit 2.17; 1 mile; saddle Logan King .
