TAPU SPORTS MEETING
WOOD CHOPPING EVENTS NEW YEAR FESTIVAL A big sports meeting has been organised by the Tapu Sports Club, including athletic and wood chopping events, for New Year’s Day, at the Recreation Ground, Tapu. The meeting will be conducted under the rules of the Northern Athletic Union. Perhaps the outstanding event on the programme is the Tapu Cup Standing Chop—on a 15in block. The lirst prize is £2O in cash and a cup. valued at 25 guineas. The second prize is one of £5, and the third £2, There will also be a maiden standing chop of £6 10s, an open standing chop of £B, and an underhand chop of £l2. The running events include a 100yds open handicap, a 120yds open handicap, a 120yds hurdle race and a 220yds open handicap. Nominations close with the secretary at noon on Saturday, December 14, as advertised. The handicapper for the chopping events is Mr. C. L. Hardy, of Auckland, and Mr. McAneny will handicap the running events. Plot water will be provided, and there will be booths on the ground. In the evening a dance will be held.
CHRISTMAS BOWLS FULL RINK TOURNAMENT Fifty-eight entries have been received for the Auckland Bowling Centre’s annual Christmas full-rink tournament, which will commence at 9 a.m. on December 26. AUCKLAND CENTRE MEETS A decision to commence the Easter tournament on Good Friday as usual, was mudo by a meeting of delegates to tho Auckland Bowling Centro last evening. Tho following notice of motion was unanimously defeated:—“That at the Dominion tournament in 1931 rinks only be played; that there be a full, week of sectional play, the winners to go forward on the two-life principle; that in the South Island a champion singles and pairs tournament be played, and a similar tournament in the North Island, the winners to meet at the Dominion tournament.,” AUCKLAND CLUB’S TOURNEY Following are additional results of yesterday’s play in the first open l'ullrink tournament in the history of the Auckland Bowling Club: SECTION A Third Round. —Thomas 15, v. WATER POLO DRAW The last match in the second round of the Auckland Water Polo Control Board’s competition, the game between Ponsonby A and Grammar, will be played next Monday evening at the Mount Eden Club’s carnival. Four matches arranged by the board last evening for the second round were:—Parnell v. Waitemata A, Waitemata Club’s carnival on Tuesday evening; H.M.S. Philomel v. Waitemata B, . Mount Eden v. Ponsonby B, Ponsonby A v. University, at Tepid Baths on December 23. Messrs. J. Enwright, S. Brooking and W. Wilson were appointed selectors of the Auckland team, and Mr. L. Brighton was registered as a referee. NEXT ’WEEK’S CARNIVALS On Monday evening, at Mount Eden Baths, the Mount Eden Swimming Club will hold a carnival. On the following evening, Waitemata will conduct a carnival in the Tedip Baths.
