WHEN THE PRESIDENT’S CHAIN WAS STOLEN

\ TREASURED relic of the Auckland Bowling Club is the president’s insignia of office, a handsome gold chain reminiscent of a Mayoral chain. This impressive adornment was first presented to the club in 1910 by the then president, Mr. William Elliott. The original chain consisted of 34 links, each with a I president’s name inscribed, and in the centre was a large Maltese cross on which the initials of the club appeared. The chain is worn by the existing president at each important function of the club. Some years ago a burglar entered the house of a president, and stole the chain, and it became that unfortunate officer’s duty tt> replace the emblem of office at great personal expense. Since then, subsequent presidents have made it a rule to place the chain in the more secure keeping of a city jeweller’s safe. The chain is valued approximately at £9O.
