RANSACKING OF EMPTY HOUSES GAOL FOR THEFT It has been the custom of Harry Albert Griffiths to patrol Auckland's empty houses. Where possible he has levered the copper boiler from its bed and taken it to a dealer. At the Police Court this morning he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. Griffiths, n cooper, aged 51. was charged with stealing, on November 2s, three brass taps and a copper valued at £1 19s 6d. the property of Harold Downes; on December 2. a copper valued at £2. belonging to Zilma Middleton: on December 6. a copper valued at £2, the property of persons unknown. He pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Hammond said that Griffiths had been visiting empty houses, removing coppers from the stands, 'and selling them to dealers. His were mean thefts, and had caused a great deal of trouble to the police. The man had a long list. He had been living in the Waikato for the past two or three years. *
