“QUITE HARMLESS”
VAGRANT UNFORTUNATE IN APPEARANCE GAOLED FOR 12 MONTHS Although, in the words of Constable Rushton, “quite harmless,” Tony Vella is a source of fear to women of the Henderson, Swanson and Kumeu districts. He stands outside their houses and refuses to go away until given food. Vella is an Austrian and has not a good command of English. His age is 49. At the Police Court this morning he was charged with being an incorrigible rogue and vagabond, having been previously convicted as a rogue and vagabond. In a most unkempt state and with his face fringed by stubble beard, Vella seemed unable to realise what the proceedings were about. Constable Rushton added that Vella had come out of gaol in August. His last sentence had been 12 months. His appearance was against him. “He will be a candidate for our rest home,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., imposing a term of 12 months’ imprisonment.
