TRAMS ON CHRISTMAS EVE
TO RUN IN QUEEN STREET *lt is hard that the one harvest night of the year should be cut off from shopkeepers of Queen Street/* said Sir George Fowlds, in addressing the Transport Board this morning on behalf of retail businessmen in Queen Street. He asked that trams bo allowed to run in Queen Street on Christmas and New Year eves. The stoppage of trams in past years had been a great curtailment to trade, said Sir George. He had. however, no objection to the banning of motor-cars and buses. Instead of people patronising the shops they were out in the middle of the street. He felt that no harm would be caused to the people by the running of the trams. Mr. Thomas Clark said that the exclusion of trams gave the advantage to some shopkeepers while denying trade to others. Mr. G. G. Ashley raised the question of the City Council’s voice in the question. In reply, Mr. Allum said he recognised that the council could prevent the running of buses and motor-cars, but not trams. Mr. A. J. Entrican suggested that the board confer with the Citv Council. • I would support any resolution that would keep all traffic out of Queen Street,” remarked Mr. E. J. Phelan, The board agreed to accede to the request.
