PORTERS ON WHARVES
HARBOUR BOARD BY-LAWS OVERTIME FOR TRAFFIC MEN Revised by-laws, including those governing the charges and conduct of porters on the wharves, were passed today by a special meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board. Provision was also made for traffic assistants on the wharves to be paid overtime at the rate of 3s 6d an hour after 10 p.rn. At present they are not paid overtime. Another by-law gives trading launches the prior right to use up-river wharves. This point has been debated for some time past and in some instances trading vessels have been inconvenienced by private launches using the wharves. The by-laws governing the activities of porters on the wharves are comprehensive. They are required to be silent and orderly while on duty; no touting is allowed; unclaimed luggage is to be handed to the traffic manager and they are required to wear clean white or brown canvas aprons while on duty. Charges are fixed as follow: One shilling for the first three package's carried or removed for one employer, and threepence for each subsequent parcel. The minimum charge is fixed at sixpence.
