COSTUME CARNIVAL

ELLERSLIE GATHERING The Ellerslie Parish Hall was a scene of gay pageantry and colour when the children of Ellerslie School celebrated their part of the fancy dress carnival which is being held to raise funds for a school dental clinic. The evening began with the grand march, which was led by a charming wee bride and her bridegroom. There followed a bewildering train of cowboys, flowers, a fierce-looking South African savage, a gallant Roman Centurion and several representations of rainbows. Alother Hubbard was there clutching a very “dead” looking dog, and even the much desired dental clinic appeared. Santa Claus and his -attendant Christmas tree were mixed with airmen, and sailors in miniature, and Robin Hood. After the grand march, several dances were given by the children of the infant department, and one of the children gave a recitation. Primer 11. gave an action sing. “Oh Dear. What Can the Matter Be?” after which the lower standards gave several items “Robin Adair” was then sung by a Standard V. boy. These items were followed by what was. for the children, the chief event of the evening—a picnic supper. This consisted of a wild scramble, and besieging of the* harassed people who bore the trays of goodies. The prizes were then awarded, the following children being successful: For the best by popular vote, Shirley Ford 1, Ray Phillips 2, Desmond Chapman 3: best paper frock, Doreen Brown 3 : most original girl, Esme Somerfield 1; most original boy, Ken Dewar I ; best girl 5-6 years, Betty Edwards; best boy 5-6 years, Desmond Chapman 1, Roy* Bolter 2; best girl 7-S years.
