OUT FOR TWO YEARS
SYDNEY PONY JOCKEY Australian Racing; Club stewards have commenced a strenuous campaign against a form of malpractice w Inch, some time back, threatened to place pony racing for ever in bad odour with the public. .. Second victim of the move was the well-known rider, J. Varley. At Ascot recently he was disqualified for two years over the running of Yolad in the first division of the Flying Handicap—a similar fate to that which befell the less prominent jockey, A. Jones, at Victoria Park a few weeks The connections of the Queensland sprinter were exonerated. Thus the officials implied that varlev had employed tactics on his own initiative which were hardly calculated to help Yolad toward success. Racing officials look upon this lapse as one of the worst in racing and, for that reason such severe penalties are inflicted. Yolad was one of the four fancied candidates for the Flying and. considering his consistent form m recent weeks, his connections thought him worthy of support. From sevens he was backed well throughout the ring, and at barrier rise it was hard to back him at better than fours. Yolad was one of the early leaders, but could not run on, and finished tenth.
