Auckland Cup Horses Gallop Prominently
RICCARTON TRIALS ARIKIWAI UNDER A CLOUD Special to THE SI X CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. Sprint honours at Riccarton this morning went to Sleipner, who ran five I furlongs in the fast time of 1.2 2-5. The two-year-old galloped before the ! breakfast hour and had a slight nor - i west wind to assist him home. But it ; was an exceptionally good gallop. ' especially as he decisively defeated ! Huntley by half a dozen lengths. Auckland Cup candidates ' n Count Cavour and Paquito also acquitted themselves satisfactorily. Count Cavour ran a smart mile with The Viscount in 1.43 1-5. and appeared to be going extra well at the end. Sleipner has had little racing, biu there is no doubt about his speed. Ins excellent sprint this morning puts him in lino for a really good chance in the Lahgmor Plate on Saturday, wmen embraces no outstanding performer. Smart One for Ellerslie The Welcome Stakes winner. Pra se, was matched with Greenaway over five furlongs the reverse way. After running the first three furlongs in o. 2- they came home in 3.3 3-5. with Praise appearing to hold her companion. It was a good gallop on the part of the Limond filly, and it shows that she is none the worse for her exertion at Riccarton. Praise looks a much fitter youngster now than when she raced at the Cup meeting, and it is going to take a smai juvenile to lower her colours in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie this month. Honour and Jaleux were given strong work. Arikiwai and Gay Crest went an easy five furlongs in 1.6. but on pulling up Arikiwai revealed distinct signs of lameness. Up till recently it was thought that his recent spell had permanently relieved him of the unsoundness that had affected him previously, but apparently he is suffering a recurrence of his old will be a thousand pities if he fails to stand up to training, for he is a good horse. Paquito’s Gallop Paquito galloped a smart seven furlongs with Marsham in 1.31. There was little between the pair throughout, and they were practically on terms at the end. It was a really good effort on the part of Marsham. and it would not be the least surprising to see him put up a good race in the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. Chide was on the track for the last time. He was given steady work on the plough, but as an indication of his fitness he made several attempts to throw his rider. The champion Paladin gelding left for Randwick today in charge of A. Groves, who was formerly attached to the Elderslie Stud. Ball Dress ran a steady three furlongs, and Htirly Burly, her stablemate, left six furlongs behind in 1.16 3- • Dutch Money was hard pressed over half a mile sprint up the back, which occupied 54, and the two-year-olds. Dunraven and Whatnot, ran a smart three furlongs. Malmsey was matched with Turnover over five furlongs on the grass, but Malmsley was far too good for her associate, whom she beat by three lengths. The time for that distance, 1.3 3-5, was good, and Malmsey must be regarded as having a good chance in the Tinwald Handicap on Saturday. Quarterdeck and Full Feather ran the last half-mile of their work in 52, and Waterline and Semper Paratus occupied 36 4-5 for their three furlongs sprint. Went His Own Way A striking seven furlong gallop was that of Subdivision, who covered that distance on the grass in 1.30 3-5. It was intended to send him only five furlongs, but he broke away from the seven and set a fast pace in the first part of the gallop. Despite this he finished well over the last half-mile, though he was tiring over the last 100yds. Nevertheless, it was a 'good gallop, being the best over that distance before breakfast. The English colt Roydon galloped a smart half-mile with the ThurnhamDivinia filly. He broke 50 for that sprint, and was going on well at the close.
Kentish. Lady and Shipshape ran the last half-mile of their work in 48 2-5, Kentish Lady having the measure of her companion. To date Kentish Lady has been a disappointment, but if she reproduces today’s track trial in

Moratorium and Weather Raid rnn home from the half mile in 49 3-5, and over two furlongs farther Proud Knight recorded 1.17. Coupling impressed with his defedt of Thurso over six furlongs in 1.17, and Grand Acre led Gaslight and Gold Mint at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.3 2-5. Decoy Bird compassed half a-mile in 49.
SILVER PAPER
WILL BE RACING AT ELLERSLIE ASPIRING TOO Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The Riccarton trainer, W. Stone, arrived back from Wellington yesterday to superintend the training of the remainder of his team. He left Silver Paper and Aspiring at Trent ham in charge of E. Murtagh. but will return to Wellington on Friday. Next week he will be represented at the Woodville meeting by Aspiring. W. Stone has a two-year-old filly by Shambles from Leading Lady, and Lord Thomond, by Thomond from Hose of Athens, in work at headquarters.
and if the latter continues to make the improvement that he has made in the last few weeks he probably will he raced at rhe holiday meetings in the North Island. Silver Paper and Assuring both claim engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, ard if they do well in the meantime they will fulfil engagements at Ellerslie. Both failed at Feilding last Saturday, but the heavy track pulled Silver Paper up, while Aspiring experienced anything but a good run.
