MISHAP IN TAUMARUNUI ,CUP

Jockey H. Gray Injured

A SENSATIONAL smash, in the Taumarunui Cup today resulted in the well-known jockey. Hector Grav, receiving a broken collarbone. ‘ ’ There were only five runners in this event, and Sir Burnett. making a reappearance after a lengthy spell, was leading, into the back stretch when he fell, and Grays mount, Ohinemuri, a hot favourite, crashed over him. Sir Burnett’s rider escaped with a shaking. Hakanoa was left well clear after the accident and had little difficulty in beating Wendav and Glena Bay, the latter having got away badly. I no weather at Taumarunui was showery and the course holding, the attendance being fair. Parfait Amour scored his first win when he easily captured the Trial Plate, and Abbess was all out to keep off Rose Impin in the hack sprint.

away badly and was soon tailing the field. Ohinemuri and Hakanoa leading up the straight from Kir Burnett. The latter then took up the running and led past tho stands from Hakanoa, Ohinemuri and Wenday, with Glena Bay still well back. Pulling hard, Kir Burnett had just arrived at the entrance 1;o the back stretch when he was seen to falter and fall, and over him toppled Ohinemuri. This left only three horses in the race, Hakanoa being well clear of Wenday. who in turn was well ahead of Glena Bay. Thus they raced throughout, Hakanoa having no difficulty in going on to win easily by three lengths from Wenday, with another three lengths back to Glena Bay. The winner was aided considerably by the accident. Hector Gray, who has not been back in the saddle six weeks, received a broken collarbone, while C. Goulsbro was more fortunate, escaping with a shaking. The accident means that Gray will have to make a quick recovery if he is to fulfil his ridis* engagements at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. A.R.C. FIXTURE SCRATCHINGS ANNOUNCED Ceremony and Cashier were scratched at 9 a.m. today for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Ceremony was among those handicapped for the Railway Handicap, and Cashier figured in the Auckland Cup.
