CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

TRAINING COLLEGE ENTERTAINS CHILDREN

FOLK DANCES AND EURYTHMiCS Largo numbers of children, drawn from the poorer districts of the city, were entertained by students of the Auckland Training College yesterday afternoon. Every year, as part of their social work, a large entertainment is organised by the students for the benefit of those children for whom Christmas-holds little in store. Contrary to the general rule of selecting children from the city and suburban orphanages, they were selected this year upon the recommendation of leading social workers, from indigent families. Early in the afternoon large parties of children, who arrived in private cars placed at the disposal of the principal, Mr. L>. M. Rae, were welcomed by the students. The students entered thoroughly into the spirit of the occasion and the small guests were soon at their ease.

Decorations placed in various places relieved the sombreness of the college building. One of the greatest attractions was a Christmas tree bowed by the weight of presents. These gifts were distributed by Mr. J. W. Shaw, lecturer in English, who. in the costumo of Father Christmas, made a welcome appearance. Other attractions included folk dances and eurythmics. The afternoon’s entertainment was concluded with an excellent meal in the tearoom, where gaily-coloured decorations lent an air of genial festivity.
