Norwich City Battered on Rocks
ELEVEN OF CREW DROWNED
ELEVEN or the crew lost their lives when the steamer Norwich City, of 5,587 tons, was battered to pieces on Gardner Island, in the Phoenix Group, north of Samoa. Hopes are held of rescuing the remainder, who are on the island.
The Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department has received the following message from the superintendent of the radio station at Apia: “The captain of the Trongate reports that he has rescued three of the crew of the Norwich City. Remaining on the island are 21. Eleven were drowned when the vessel struck, including six Arab firemen. “Very heavy seas are raging. We are doing our utmost to rescue the remainder.”

drowned when the vessel struck. Twenty-one of the crew are still on the island. Three have been rescued and are on the Trongate. Enormous seas are breaking over the vessel. A rocket line has been sent ashore, also water and provisions. The captain, officers and engineers are safe.
