NEW CITY ENGINEER

POSSIBLES NOW REDUCED TO NINE

FINALITY MOT YET LIKELY The appointment of the new City Engineer for Auckland will again be considered—if not finalised—at this evening’s meeting of the City Council. A special committee was set up three weeks ago to examine the 75 applications. It has now reduced the list to nine for presentation to council this evening. Any member of the council not on the committee has the right, however, to add a name or names of his fancy to the provisional nine. The privilege is a concession designed to preclude criticism that the committee’s selection was arbitrary or irregular. The council may decide to make a final selection at once, but the more probable course will be that the applications tentatively sustained will be sent back to the selection committee, or to another for a further elimination to three names, which will later be reported to the full council. If finality is not reached this evening it is likely, nevertheless, that the new engineer will be announced before Christmas as the council will meet again for a “washing-up” session.
