NEW CHRISTCHURCH PORT

ESTABLISHMENT IN ESTUARY

HARBOUR FOR SMALL SHIPS Special to THE SUN CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Plans are being matured in Christchurch for the construction of a port for small ships in the estuary of the Heathcote and Avon Rivers. It is expected that the engineer’s report on the scheme will be ready next week. Investigations made so far show that there is no quicksand and that the depth of water at low tide in the proposed channel through the estuary mouth is 12ft. At the bottom of the channel there is a depth of 18ft to 25ft of mud and then a rock bottom. The water on the Sumner bar at low tide is estimated to be about 12ft. Plans are being made for a swinging basin and a flagged channel, and the syndicate backing the scheme proposes to reclaim land, having an area of more than 14,000 acres under its control. The syndicate proposes to derive its revenue from wharfage dues, whicn will be fixed by the terms of the Order-in-Council giving authority to establish a port.
