PORT DARWIN’S IDLE FIREMAN
GIVEN JOB IN GAOL “I won’t work,” repeated Samuel Murray appearing at the Police Court this morning for sentence on a charge of refusing to obey the lawful commands of the master of the Port Darwin on the high seas. He was sent to gaol. The offence was alleged to have been committed between November 12 and November 30 on the run from Panama to Auckland. Murray, a fireman, appeared at the Police Court yesterday, when he said that he was unable to do even the lightest work on account of bad rheumatism. Captain Sawbridge, of the Port Darwin, produced medical certificates stating that Murray was well able to do light duty. “Are you ready to go back to work now?” asked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., of Murray this morning. “No,” was the decided reply. The Magistrate: Well you’ll work in gaol for a month, but you will be put on board the ship if it leaves the New Zealand coast before that time. Murray: And I won’t work then. Captain Sawbridge asked that the man forfeit his wages. The Magistrate: He can be made to do that or to pay expenses incurred by 3'ou in finding a substitute. Captain Sawbridge said that he would want a substitute as he was going to seek permission to pay Murray off in New Zealand and have him sent home as a distressed British seaman. The ship might not leave the coast for two months.
