ON THE GREEN

Bowls and Bowlers

(By

JACK HIGH.)

ConsidcriDe the prolific choice of topic* embodied in The bumper season now well launched, bowling presidents in Auckland, with a few exceptions, have not displayed great imagination m their remarks to the respective meetings they have addressed this so,- I son. However, Mr. E. I*-. Daniels, president of the Remuera Club, last Siturdav struck a bright note in his :\ddress of welcome to the members of the Auckland Club. He said that his •iw ii dub. which is the largest club m tho Dominion, was entertaining the parent club of bowling in New' Zealand —Auckland. It was a coincidence that w hile the age of the Auckland C uo was 68 vears, the age of his own club was exactly half that number. Both , lubs had placed 2 4 teams apiece into the event, making a total of 48 teams playing on the day. which number ot entrants, he contended, constituted a record for such an event in the Dominion, and perhaps the Empire. In welcoming the guests of the club he laid special emphasis on the fine feeling that existed between the members «d the two f lubs, and added that the clubs had been visiting each other continuously for 33 years, which term of years would no doubt create another record. 0 Toward the close of the vear, 30 Canadian bowlers, some of whom are accompanied by their wives, will visit New Zealand. The Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association has made a comprehensive itinerary o.f entertainment covering the month the visitors are on these shores. All arrangements have been carefully planned to welcome fellow-sportsmen in • keeping with the highest traditions of the It is Now Zealand's tm.i to extend tho hand of hospitality to its kinsmen from Canada; for during last year, representatives of the New Zealand Bowling Association visited Canada. The following extracts from a report tabled by Mr. J. W. Hardley, president. of the party, before the Dominion Bowling Council speak eloquently of The warm hearted receptions given there. •‘Everywhere the members of the party were greeted not as visitors, but ns kinsmen, springing from the; same stock-blood relatives animated by the same aspirations and the same characteristics. ' Canada is famed for the magnitude of its forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers, but the deep impression was that the largeness of the character of the people is comparable thereto.' Notable receptions and welcomes were accorded us in every town and city from Montreal to Vancouver and Victoria, by mayors, boards of trade, chambers of commerce, bowling associations and bowlers, which indeed made one proud of one’s Canadian and British connections.”

Among the many notable receptions was one given at Toronto. The report adds; * After the match on the Parkdale green, a dinner at which* some six itindred guests were seated, was given : n honour of the party. One of the speakers was the Hon. Howard Fersnsson. Prime Minister ot' Ontario. His most eloquent address on Empire and Empire trade was a stirring one.” Of such was the character of the honour paid to New Zealand bowlers on their visit. The report further adds: Historv was made by this visit to Panada; the team having had the honour of being the first party of New Zealand bowlers to visit the sister Dominion.” „ , . It certainly behoves New Zealanders t«» meet the visitors in the same spirit as not only visiting bowlers, but as business men and kinsmen. * * * Auckland bowlers are reminded that the closing date for entries to be received for the blue ribbon test ot bowling for New Zealand this season—the Dominion Bowling Tournament to li*» held at Dunedin, commencing on January 17—is Saturday next. The entry of 102 players into the Auckland Centre’s open singles tournament to commence next Monday mav be regarded as a satisfactory reason for The staging of the event, although it might have been confidently expected from the clamour by such a large number of players that many more contestants would have found their \\ a> into the tournament. The 102 players have been divided into 17 sections, and rhe green selected may be considered as good as available. All that is necessary is that a spell of fine weather wiU set in and make them keener than at the present time. The entrants do not present much difficulty in selecting possible winners, although there is always the chance that some unknown player may come out on top. But with such a large number of sections the interesting stages will be inter-sectional, post-sec-tional and final games. The honours of the A section should so to J. Wakerley or J. F. Hosking. B section winners should be found in J. Trayes or P. J. Scantlebury. The C section presents a harder proposition to the entrants, for it contains J. F. Benson who is playing well at the present time, and was the run-ner-up for the champion of champion singles title last season; M. Walker nho is not showing his exceptionally high standard of play at the present Time; and J. Mingins. The winner should be found among the three mentioned. K. E. Daniels, Kemuera’s president, and H. Sykes, a player who has shown excellent form this season, should fight out the final stages of the D section. Clarke and G. V. Pearce are probable winners in the E section, while the F section contains excellent bowlers in D. Campbell. J. Wooller, an experienced and successful exponent of the singles game; and J. T. Wallett. The honours of the G section should easily go to C. 11. de Launay, the run: ner-up for the Dominion Singles title last season, if he is in form at all. Section H should find its winner from L. .T. Keys or J. A. Nash. C. F. Hardley might easily come out the winner of the I section, while C. Garrard or P. J. Aldred could be expected to win the next section. The following section presents a bright array of good bowlers in E. Knight, H. Jenkin. C. Maher, and K. S. Mackv. H. Jenkin. however, could easily be expected to win this contest if in form. K. li. Koeford, J. Potter and W. Ure will make sturdy opposition in the I- | section. c. Addison. A. Parker are possible winners in the M section, while H. j Bremner is certainly the likely win- \ ner of the N section. F. M. Ritchie should cull the honours from the O section; A. Parsons in the P section, and S. Lamb in the final j section. Showing that the Auckland Club has developed the competitive spirit of the game, no fewer than 13 members of Their club have found their way into the tournament, Carlton living up to Its reputation, has 11 entrants. The tournament should be thoroughly enjoyed by the competitors and find favour as a forerunner of many much larger events in the future.
