Cottage Gutted A :our-roomed dwelling insured for £SOO in the State Office, owned by Frank Hopgood and occupied by Mrs. Clara Hounsell, was partially gutted during the night. The cover on the contents was £250 in the Phoenix Office. 0 * * ‘Martyrs to Opium” In the Police Court today Sue Ham, described as a marked gardener and trafficker in opium, was lined £75 for being in possession of prepared opium. George Wong and Young Poy. two of his employees, were lined £lO for having in their possession an opium Pipe and other utensils. They were described as being martyrs to the drug. • * * Carpenter’s Fall As the result of falling while engaged in putting up a ceiling in the New Slealand Dairy Company’s building in Eden Terrace, a carpenter, Mr. Ray Lonegan, aged 35, of 32 Randolph Street, Newton, received extensive bruises on his body. He was removed to the Auckland Hospital by the St. John Ambulance and after treatment ( allowed to go home. • .. * * * vdy Council Meetings In ordinary circumstances this event's meeting of the Auckland City Council would be the final one of the year, but as business accumulates rapidly, it has been decided to hold mother meeting as a “washing-up” session before the holidays. The council, therefore, is expected to sit again December 19 so that little business will be outstanding when the council meets again in the new year. * * * Bus Licensing On North Shore ..The new No. 2 (North Shore) licensing Authority, under the Motor Omnibus Licensing Act, will start to function in January. This information was given to the present authortiy( which is Devonport Borough Council) last evening by the clerk. Under amending Act of the last session of Parliament the No. 2 Authority will 'onsist of two representatives each from Devonport and Talcapuna and one each from Northcote and Birkenand Waitemata County.
