MANY CRIMES AGAINST THE LAW ONE YEAR’S STATISTICS WASHINGTON, Monday. According to tile annual report of the Department of Justice for the year ended June 30, 1929, more than 21,000 persons were sent to prison for violations of the prohibition laws, with an average sentence of 147 days. In the year there were 56,786 criminal prosecutions instituted, of which 56,455 had terminated. There were 47,100 convictions and 1,477 acquittals. The fines totalled £295,260, and the value of the property seized was over £540,000. There were 4,555 jury trials, and 43,183 persons pleaded guiltj-. The total time of the sentences imposed was 5.663 years. One of the most notable gains was in “padlock” or injunction proceedings.
