BANK HOLIDAYS STAND

FAILURE TO EFFECT REDUCTION OPPOSITION BY OFFICERS From Our Resident Reporter WELLINGTON, Today. Attempts by the Associated Chambers of Commerce to reduce the number of bank holidays have failed because of opposition on the part of the Bank Officers’ Guild. Following their last annual conference, the Associated Chambers determined to prepare a schedule for suitmission. to the asociated banks. This schedule, which was drawn up following a suggestion by Mr. F. Grose, the Asociated Banks’s chairman, omitted the four saints’ days and Dominion Day—March 1 and 17, April 23, September 23 and November 30, from the schedule of holidays. Amending legislation is necessary before an alteration can be made in bank holidays, and at the instance of the banks, the chambers conferred with, the Bank Officers’ Guild. The guild appears to have been quite"willing to yield the four days mentioned provided that officers received an extra four days added to their annual leave. This would involve expense to the banks, as officers over a certain degree of service already receive three weeks’ holiday, and it is improbable that the chambers will pursue their attempt any further.
