CHIEFTAIN’S FUNERAL

WAIOHUA LEADER BURIED Napi Wiriliana Takaaniui, high, chiei oi the Te Akitai sub-tribe of the Waiohua people, was buried at Pukaki Maori cemetery yesterday. The burial place is situated on a corner of land fringed by the Manukau Harbour. Tbe cbieftaixi died last Friday aud a large tangi was conducted at Pukaki village, Mangere. Full tribal honours were observed at the funeral and mats were laid on the coffin. Chief Wirihana’s son, his daughters and bis aged mother were .the principal mourners, hut there were representatives of important tribes in the province. The Rev. Otene Paora, assisted by Nurse Ivy Jones, of the Methodist Maori Mission, conducted the graveside service. Hymns set in Maori to English tunes / were sung by the natives. Napi Wirihana was a grandson of Ihaka Takaaniui, the famous Mangere leader.
