MUSIC WEEK

AUCKLAND SOCIETY’S SUGGESTION “TO CREATE ACTIVITY’’ The need for greater activity on the part of musicians in advancing the cause of music, was stressed by Dr. S. K.-Phillips and Mr. Maughan Barnett, city organist, at last evening’s meeting of the Auckland Society of Musicians. As a means to this end the organisation of a music week was suggested. THE matter /as first referred to by the president, Dr. Phillips, in his opening remarks. He said the suggestion had been made that all the societies in Auckland should cooperate in arranging a big music week .This, it was considered, would do a great deal of good in attracting the public mind toward music. Mr. Barnett said the idea of holding a music week had been in his mind for some time past. He thought there were signs that a music revival was at hand. People were getting a little tired of canned music, and were wanting the real thing. Music was coming back into the theatres, and he thought that this was an indication of the public mind on the question.

Very few people appeared to realise the possibilities of music in Auckland and what could be done by a combined effort. Auckland was noted for its civic pride, and he thought that this would also encourage many people not actually interested in music to give such a movement their support. Trade organisations could be asked to support it, and also local organisations. A little such excitement he thought would do a great deal of good.

Dr. Phillips said it was gratifying to note the keen interest shown by Mr. Barnett in the suggestion. He thought personally that the question should go before the council, and that the suggestion be also sent on to the New Zealand Society, so that it could be made a Dominion-wide movement. Dr. Phillips promised members that the suggestion would not be lost sight of during the coming season.
