TENNIS PARTY TO CELEBRATE COMING-OF-AGE
HAPPY AFTERNOON AND EVENING AT TAKAPUNA To celebrate the twenty-first birthday of their niece. Miss Nellie McGrath, Mr. and Mrs., R. M. Scelly entertained a number of young people at their residence, 14 William Street, Takapuna, on Saturday afternoon and evening. The afternoon was occupied with a progressive tennis tournament, which was won by Miss K. Adams and Mr. K. Holdsworth. Mrs. Scelly wore a trim blue linen frock, relieved with ivory, and Miss McGrath had on pleated ivory crepe de chine, piped with daffodil yellow. In the evening the guests were entertained with dancing and competitions, prizewinners being Misses M. Tattersal and H. Hopkinson, and Mr. J. Letcher. Among those present were Mrs. F. McGrath, Mrs. W. B. Suttie, Mrs. E. Anderson, Miss Jean Beck, Miss Karo McGill, Miss K. Adams, Miss Hilda Hopkinson (Hamilton), Miss F. Anderson, Miss M. Peterson, Miss L. DARGAVILLE BAZAAR METHODIST CHURCH FUNDS BENEFIT About £BO was netted as a result of the annual bazaar in aid of the Methodist Church, held at Dargaville on Saturday. The Mayor, Mr. F. A. Jones, formally opened the function. The stallholders were:—Produce, Mesdames M. Martin and S. Phillips; fancy work, Mesdames J. Pengelly, T. Ratcliffe and W. Martin; plain, Mesdames Spragg,* T. J. Parkes and Forman; cakes, Mesdames F. Wordsworth, C. N. Taylor and N. McDonald; sweets, Mrs. E. W. Hames and Bible class girls; flowers, Misses J. Simpkin, J. Crump and D. Wordsworth; Christmas Tree, Mrs. Worsley and Miss K. Page; tea rooms, Miss A. Phillips, Mrs. H. W. Page and helpers; competitions, Miss G. Spragg; side-shows, Young Men’s Bible class members. A programme of concert items arranged by the Rev. E. W. Hames delighted the audience in the evening. Mr. C. D. Wykes was secretary of the bazaar. BOWLERS’ WHIST DRIVE SUCCESSFUL PARTNERS’ EVENING A most successful partners’ evening whist drive was held in the Palais Theatre, Northcote, last evening by members and friends of the Waitemata Bowling Club. There were thirty-two partners participating and an enjoyable evening was spent. The winners of the first prize were Mr. YV. YVatson and Mrs. J. Watson, Mr. G. Burns and Mrs. F. Townsend securing the second prize. Mrs. E. Bailey and Mrs. D. Rowles were awarded the consolation prize. At the conclusion of the games prizes for the highest aggregate score secured during the last session of nine nights were presented to Mr. E. Bailey and Mrs B. Herrick.
Mr. YV. McKinstrie acted as M.C., and at the interval light refreshments were served by the women’s committee.
FAREWELL PARTY
MR. AND MRS. SILBON BEATTIE ENTERTAIN A farewell party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Silbon Beattie last Saturday evening at their residence. King Terrace, Herne Bay, in honour of Air. and Mrs. E. HEALTH CAMP
COMMUNITY SUNSHINE ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Community Sunshine Association met yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon at “Sunshine House,” Nelson Street. Before beginning the business of the meeting, the president made sympathetic reference to Airs. Zahara, a devoted instructor at the Girls’ Club, and active member of the auxiliary, in the loss of her little son last week. The members rose and passed a silent vote of sympathy.
Airs. Ferner then reported on the progress that was being made with regard to arrangements for the summer health camp for children at Waiheke. She explained that the house at Ostend, Waiheke, was being set in order. Wonderful help had been forthcoming. A local committee had been formed willing to assist in every possible way. The tanks would be in place immediately, that arduous work having been done by residents. Some sort of dining hall to be used as playroom in inclement weather would have to be erected. Here help was forthcoming from an unexpected quarter. Fifteen young men, students at the Auckland Teachers’ Training College, had volunteered to go down to the island and work for a few days. The president’s report was received with applause, and she was warmly thanked for her energy in getting the arrangements so much ahead, in so short a time. The treasurer’s and club superintendent’s reports were read and adopted, and the meeting then turned its attention to the Paddy’s Alarket which will be held in the grounds on Friday, 6th, in aid of the health camp. The Alayoress, Airs. A. D. Campbell, has kindly consented to open it at 11 a.m. A feature of the afternoon was the display of beautiful wooden toys made by the pupils of . the manual and technical schools, Newton, under the direction of Air. Hunter and Miss McDonnell. They -will be on sale at Paddy’s Alarket on Friday, 6th. Afternoon tea was then served, Airs. Ranger acting as hostess. In closing the meeting, which was most enthusiastic, the president said she felt sure all members and friends would rally round on Friday and patronise all the many and ~ varied attractions provided. GIFT EVENING PLEASANT HERNE BAY PARTY A very pleasant gift evening was given by Airs. W. Hardley, of Curran Street, Herne Bay, in honour of the approaching marriage of Aliss Naomi Guildford and Air.
