MARATHON FLIGHT

ONEHUNGA’S CHAMPION PIGEONS In the teeth of north-west gales and cyclonic conditions, two Onehunga pigeons battled gamely from Christchurch to Onehunga for two days and two nights during the week-end. Seven other valuable birds that started in the race on Saturday morning have not yet reached their home lofts. Liberated at 5.5 a.m. on Saturday morning in frightful weather, Mr. A. Langton’s hen, Cymene, arrived in Onehunga at 9.45 a.m. on Monday, having been in the air for nearly 52 hours on her journey of 473 miles. She won the Onehunga Club’s Championship Cup for her owner. Twenty minutes later, Mr. W. Sargent’s hen. Rosella, flew into her loft on her second flight from Christchurch this season. In the first race she finished third, and as both events were flown under the worst conditions yet experienced by the club, she must be regarded- as a bird of exceptional stamina. She won Mr. Harrison’s special prize for her owner —of nine starters these were the only two to finish. The season’s average, computed from all race points, resulted: Mr. J. Wallace’s team, 1,054 yards a minute, 1: F. Wilson and Son's team, 1.042 yards a minute. 2; Mr. A. Langton’s team, 1,034 yards a minute, 3.
