Paquito’s Chance
BETTER THAN STAR STRANGERS
Both Nicely Placed in Auckland Cup
FINISHING second with 8.5 to Nightmareh m the Melbourne Cup, Paquito must be considered a nicely treated horse with 41b less in the Auckland Cup, to be run at D'lcislie on Boxing Day. A splendid invitation has been extemU d to the owner of the Thurnham gelding, and it "dl nideet be surprising if owner 11. A. Knight and trainer 1’- D. Jones decline it. if Paquito has gone on the right w <i> sim. returning from Australia.
In the big Flemington race Might- j march carried 9.2 and won by four lengths from Paquito, 8.5. In the Auckland Cup Niglitmarch was raised Sib. and Paquito was dropped 41b, so that for the Melbourne beating the latter was asked to meet Niglitmarch on 121 b better terms. Perhaps it was this view of the situation on the part of the A.R.C. handicapper that caused the son of Nightraid to be scratched, rather than dissatisfaction with the weight awarded their own horse. If this reasoning is correct—-and it probably is-—then it is a direct pointer to Paquito’s prospects. But quite apart from this, Paquito must be respected when summing up the Auckland Cup situation. To go back a bit in considering Paquito’s chances'. Niglitmarch won the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap with 9.4, and a 101 b penalty brought his weight Cor the Metropolitan, run two days later, to 9.12. Pie ran second, beaten by a length by Loquacios. Paquito 8.7 was within half a length of Night - march, and was finishing fast, having come from a long way back. Paquito received a bad spin in the Caulfield Cup, being out of a place, but in the Melbourne Cup he perhaps beat the rest just as easily as Niglitmarch beat him. Faith in Southerner So it will be seen that in pinning his faith strongly to Paquito, one has good Australian form to go upon. The Thurnham gelding is a born stayer—that was jockey Maurice McCarten’s considered opinion after he had ridden him in all his races on the other side. The progress made by Paquito has been phenomenal. Ten months ago he won his first race, the Trial Stakes at Wingatui, and was taken to Randwick a few weeks later—but more as a galloping companion for Limerick than as a potential stake earner. Aucklanders will not see Limerick in action, but they should see the same colours carried with distinction by Paquito. Having confessed to a prime fancy Cor Paquito. attention can now be turned to others. Chide lias 9.4, and ho has got every bit as much as his admirers expected, perhaps a pound or two more when one considers that Niglitmarch was let in with only 81b more than his Melbourne Cup weight. Is it too much to expect Chide’s new owner, Mr. T. C. Trautwein, to let the Paladin gelding take his chance m the Auckland Cup. Probably it is. lor he is to be placed aboard the Sydney boat at Wellington on Friday. Star Stranger Too
When Historic defeated Star Stranger in the Mitchelson Cup, they were both weighted at 10.0 in the mile and a-quarter handicap on the second day of the A.R.C. spring meeting. Mr. McManemin, in placing both on the 8.12 mark, has shown commendable consistency, and at the same time expresses the view that they are equally as good at two miles.
Of the pair Star Stranger is preferred, for this reason: Historic was a very fit horse when he won the Winter Cub at Riccarton last August, and was then kept going to win the Avondale Cup six weeks later, and the Mitchelson Cup a fortnight afterward, on October 5. Then he was kept going L'or the New Zealand Cup on November 9, so it is to be assumed that it was necessary to keep him up to concert pitch all that time. On the other hand Star Stranger was not tuned right up tb the time he was seen running on srongly in fifth place in the W.R.C. Handicap on October 26, In the Shade winning that race narrowly from Rabbi. It was then announced that Star Stranger would miss the New Zealand Cup, and this was at once put down to his lack of form. It has since been stated that the real, reason was that the trainer realised the futility of attempting to concede 291 b to Chide and took the horse home. One or two other trainers had similar ideas on the subject, but the owners decided to go on with it. The result we know. So, taken all in all. Star Stranger, with his luxurious impost of 5.12, is fancied second only to Paquito. It has been stated that Star Stranger is to do tho “smalls” this month; it is an even money chance that a hasty change of plans has already been made. Pegaway Has a Chance For a horse with his performances at Ellerslio nearly twelve months ago, together with his recent Cambridge and Te Rapa sprint successes under big weights, Pegaway must possess a splendid chance. There is no reason why lie should not stay, for he won tho” last A.R.C. Handicap, a mile and a-half, impressively. A good deol could be written of Pegaway, but sufficient to say that be has to be included in the final half dozen. In the Shade has IMb. more to carry than he ran second with in the New Zealand Cup, and his second was probably no better than was Paquito’s in the Melbourne Cup. Therefore, actually on those two performances, the southerner, dropped 41b, can almost be said to liavo 5Mb the better of it with In tho Shade. The latter is a game bit of stuff, and it was only this gameness, backed by most vigorous riding, that carried him into second place at Riccarton. It may stanch him in good stead at Ellerslic on Boxing Day. Concentrate was not seen at his best in the New Zealand Cup, but he was decisively beaten by both Rabbi and Spearmiss in the C..T.C. Metropolitan Handicap. Nevertheless Concentrate lias only to be caught right on the day to take some beating. Little lias been heard of Prince Humphrey of late, and it may not be until the tracks get easier that he is heard from again. Fancy an A.J.C. Derby winner of fourteen months ago getting into the Auckland Cup with 191 b. under the weight-for-age scale. Will Corinax Repeat? The records of the race would indicate that the odds are heavy against Corinax winning the Cup again this month. He scored with 7.4 last Boxing Day, and lie had not won again until Monday last at Takapuna, when he led all the way in the nine*-furlongs St. Andrew’s Handicap. There lias been keen speculation as to how Corinax would bo treated. For a proved stayer—and there are mighty few in the race—the Magpie gelding appears to have been handsomely treated, and lie promises to be dangerous again. Vertigern, too, is in light, but !m has not been racing up t<» form of late. Oratrix too has gone off, and Count Cavour. now right down to 7.7. is treated as a buck number. Me ran some good races at Riccarton last
danger, and he is a sure starter, nil going well in the interim. Kick Oft and llovlake arc not particularly fancied, although the latter was a good fourth in the New Zealand Cup. Prodice made short work of the opposition in the recent Alison Cup, and if produced in the same condition on Boxing Hay may sec the journey out under T. 3. Seatown is preferred of the quartet on tho 7.1 mark, and of those on the minimum Spearmiss, Atholspear, Goshawk, Pride, Shrewd. The Lover and The Hawk read the pick, together with the three-year-old Hunting Cry, Jaleux and Taurua. It is a great field, probably tlic best that Mr. McManemin has ever been called upon to handicap, and lie appears to have got through an exceedingly difficult problem very creditably.
Paquito is preferred to Star Stranger at this stage, but the foil half dozen that appeal most comprise:
