SIGNALS INTERRUPTED

LIMITED EXPRESS DELAYED LAST EVENING POWER STOPPAGE A stoppage of electric power interrupted the automatic railway signal system between Mercer and Mangere and resulted in the Daylight Limited express from Wellington arriving 24 minutes late at Auckland last evening.

Several heavy goods trains running between Auckland and Frankton were also affected.

Though the fault occurred about 8.15, it was not traced until about 11.30, owing to the darkness of the night. It is considered that a telegraph wire brought dow n by the wind became entangled in overhead hightension cables which supply the pow’er for the signals. Repairs were effected by an early hour this morning, and normal timetables resumed. In the event of any defect, the signals register a danger warning, and the trains have to be despatched* from station to station by special’ order.
