CLOSING OF BRANCH LINES
MR. STERLING TO VISIT WAIUKU FUTURE OF RAILWAY From Our Own Correspondent WAIUKU, Tuesday. The possibility of the Waiuku branch railway being closed has caused some anxiety in the district, and Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager, has agreed to address a meeting of residents on the subject on Friday evening. The meeting is being arranged by the Waiuku Chamber of Commerce and the Waiuku branch of the Farmers’ Union. It is recalled that the Government’s suggestion that branch lines that are not paying should be closed, and representations have been made to Cabinet Ministers that the indirect benefit conferred on the district bv the railway in tho promotion of more farming and in other ways compensate for the small deficiency in the working accounts. It is anticipated that at Friday’s meeting the subject wall be fully dealt with from the points of view of the residents and the department.
It was hoped that the Minister of Railways, Hon. W. B. Taverner, would accompany Mr. Sterling, hut so far there is no word that 1m will be present.
