ACTION SETTLED

FIREMAN’S CLAIM AGAINST SEAMEN’S UNION

TERMS NOT ANNOUNCED A settlement on terms was arranged between the parties in the claim for damages by John Thwaites, a ship’s fireman, against the New Zealand Federated Seamen’s Union and Thomas F. Anderson, secretary of the Auckland union, in the Supreme Court today. claimed £l5O general damages and £7O for loss of wages, alleging that the union’s servant had illegally interfered with his contract by refusing to allow the master of the steamer Taniwlia to continue employing him in his usual occupation, and threatened to hold up the ship unless he was dismissed. Thwaites further claimed that he had obtained a job on the Tofua on Alay 17 this year, and that the following day the union’s servant took a similar line of action, and made similar threats, as a result of which plaintiff had lost his employment on both vessels, and since he had not been able to obtain work at his usual occupation. The defence was a categorical denial of the charges. Air. Dickson appeared for plaintiff, and Air. Holnulen for the defendants. After hearing lengthy evidence Air. Holdmden applied for an adjournment to confer with his client regarding a settlement, and he announced later that an agreement had been reached, and the case could be struck out. Air. Dickson said the settlement yvas on terms satisfactory’ to both parties, but these were not announced. The case was struck out.
